James Sprague & Aimee Cringle are the 2026 CrossFit Games champions

After three days and 20 scored events, marking the CrossFit Games' 20th anniversary with the largest event count in the competition's history, James Sprague and Aimee Cringle have been crowned the 2026 CrossFit Games champions at the SAP Center in San Jose, California.

James Sprague took the title of Fittest Man on Earth for the second time with a final score of 1,318 points, holding off a hard-charging Dallin Pepper by just 27 points, with Jay Crouch rounding out the podium in third. Sprague won two events outright, the Jump Pull Yoke and Machine 7200m, and added four second-place finishes across the Games to seal the win.

Aimee Cringle claimed the Fittest Woman on Earth title with 1,394 points, finishing well clear of runner-up Emma Lawson (1,258) and third-placed Lucy Campbell (1,229). Cringle's win was built on outright dominance, with five event wins across the Ranch 7200m, the deadlift portion of the CrossFit Total, the Grass Track Race, the 500 Run, and the Triple Pig.

As users of the GOWOD mobility app, the team couldn't be more proud of James and Aimee's achievements. Their dedication in the gym has always gone hand in hand with the mobility work that keeps them moving well under the demands of elite competition, and this win reflects the work they've put into their training as a whole, mobility included.

Men's results: James Sprague wins his second CrossFit Games title

Sprague's 1,318 points edged out Dallin Pepper's 1,291, a 27 point margin, with Jay Crouch third on 1,228. His week broke down like this:

How mobility training supported James Sprague and Aimee Cringle at the 2026 CrossFit Games

Mobility plays a specific, mechanistic role in how well an athlete can occupy the positions their sport demands under load. When usable range is limited, athletes tend to compensate: a joint that can't move through the range a movement calls for shifts load onto a neighbouring structure less suited to absorb it, most often the lumbar spine standing in for restricted hip or thoracic motion.

Sustained compensation under heavy or repeated load is associated with reduced positional efficiency and greater strain on the substituting joint. Good mobility is the foundation for the opposite: paired with the motor control to own that range, the athlete can actively access the position a movement requires, rep after rep, without the nervous system capping the range or an adjacent joint taking load it shouldn't.

Both Sprague and Cringle are daily GOWOD users. Aimee first opened GOWOD in 2020 and has never stopped using it since. James made it part of his preparation in the summer of 2024. Since then, they’ve opened GOWOD every single day.

Movement category Events Primary mobility demand Consequence if limited
Overhead pressing under fatigue 2007 Hopper (push jerks), CrossFit Total (shoulder press), Echo Thruster (thrusters) Shoulder flexion combined with thoracic extension and full scapular upward rotation to stack the bar overhead at lockout. In the thruster, the front rack is deliberately shallower than in a front squat or squat clean, the elbows stay lower to preserve the squat to press transition, so the front rack mobility demand is comparatively lower; the overhead lockout demand, expressed under lower body fatigue, is the limiting factor. Compensatory lumbar hyperextension, shifting load off the shoulder girdle onto the lower back.
Overhead squat pattern 2020 Speed Snatch, The Hopper 2026 (power/hang/squat snatches) Simultaneous ankle dorsiflexion, hip flexion depth, thoracic extension, and glenohumeral flexion with wrist extension to receive and stabilise the bar overhead in a deep squat. The widest simultaneous range demand of any pattern in the week. Any single limitation forces a miss or a compensation, most often rounding through the upper back or losing squat depth.
Squat pattern receiving (axial load) CrossFit Total (back squat), Run Hang Squat Clean Ankle dorsiflexion and hip flexion depth for full depth squatting; the clean adds the front rack demand. Shoulder external rotation and flexion with thoracic extension to keep the torso upright under the bar. Perceived wrist stiffness in the rack is frequently the distal expression of limited shoulder external rotation rather than a true wrist restriction. Limited ankle dorsiflexion or hip flexion can stop the athlete breaking parallel. At end range, a posterior pelvic tilt (butt wink) where it reflects mobility rather than hip morphology, can move load into lumbar flexion under compression. Limited shoulder external rotation degrades rack and bar position (elbows down, bar forward in the clean; reduced postural efficiency and force transfer in the back squat), the associated wrist strain being distal, not a wrist problem.
Hip hinge loading CrossFit Total (deadlift), Fibonacci Final (double kettlebell deadlifts) Hamstring extensibility allowing hip flexion under load while maintaining a relatively neutral spine, with active posterior chain control. When limited hip flexion runs out, the lumbar spine may substitute through flexion under load, which is thought to increase demand on the passive lumbar structures.
Hanging hip flexion Climbing Snail (toes to bars), The Hopper 2026 (toes to bars) Active hip flexion to bring the feet to the bar from a dead hang, combined with sufficient posterior chain and lat length to hold the overhead hang position. Reduced active hip flexion range under a hang tends to increase reliance on kipping momentum and can raise the demand placed on the shoulder.
Kipping pulling 2007 Hopper (pull ups) Cyclical hip flexion extension to generate the kip, with shoulder flexion extension through each rep, distinct from the fixed end range hip flexion a toes to bar requires. Limited hip extension or thoracic mobility reduces momentum transfer through the kip, which tends to push more of the workload onto the shoulder and grip.
Shoulder rotations on transitions Triple Pig (bar muscle ups), Roll to Support AMRAP Large amplitude shoulder flexion to extension through the transition, combined with the capacity to generate force across internal rotation at end range. The bar muscle up and the roll to support both load internal rotation under bodyweight as the shoulder drives from below to above the bar or rings. Limited rotational range or, more often, insufficient force production through internal and external rotation stalls the transition. The turnover slows or fails, and athletes commonly compensate with added momentum that raises stress at the shoulder.
Inverted overhead control Handstand Sprint, Fibonacci Final (deficit handstand push ups) Near 180 degree shoulder flexion plus wrist extension under bodyweight load. Where overhead flexion is limited, athletes often compensate with ribcage flare and lumbar extension; this pattern can increase anterior shoulder and lumbar compensation.
Rotational and multi planar power 3D Throw Thoracic and hip rotation for the lateral throws; thoracic and hip extension for the backward throw. Limited rotation is commonly compensated for through the lumbar spine, a frequent site of rotational strain in throwing patterns.
Endurance based locomotion Ranch 7200m, Grass Track Race, 500 Run, Machine 7200m (row/ski) Efficient hip extension (running, rowing) through a moderate range, repeated at high volume. Reduced hip extension range, often from restricted hip flexor length, is associated with compensatory lumbar extension, which may become more pronounced as fatigue accumulates over a long event.
Swim mechanics Swim Standard Shoulder internal and external rotation for the swim strokes, combined with repeated hip flexion to extension. Limited internal rotation collapses the catch phase, and the athlete compensates with excessive trunk roll to reach the position, reducing propulsive efficiency in the water.

Athletes with pre-existing joint or spine conditions including shoulder instability, disc pathology, spondylolisthesis, a history of subacromial pain, or acute low back pain, should have overhead, inverted, hip-hinge, and loaded-squat work managed individually by a clinician, since generic mobility guidance does not address these conditions directly.
